1.DON’T talk about money

When you want to start a conversation with a native English speaker from America it is best to avoid talking about money, because money is known for being a touchy subject for Americans. 

Why? Because asking someone how much they paid for certain things or how much they earn is offensive and inappropriate. The topic of money isn’t completely off-limits, however, if you do not know the person on a personal level then talking about money can be a bad way to start a conversation.

Instead, try starting the conversation with a basic “hello” and “how are you?”. By using basic and simpler phrases, you make the other person feel more at ease and their chances of continuing the conversation are very likely.

2.DON’T ask too many personal questions

Another no-no is starting the conversation by asking too many personal questions right away. When you first meet someone, you avoid asking too many personal questions. 

If you ask too many personal questions right away you can make the other person uncomfortable and uneasy, especially if you hardly know the person. Don’t jump right in and start asking them a bunch of personal questions about their family history and where they work.

Instead, use informal language. This will help you talk about things that aren’t seen as personal, such as talking about environmental things. And, if you do decide to ask a question, make sure it is not too personal. 

Ask them about what type of work they do or if they are enjoying the weather. It is better to keep your questions simple and easy to answer. For example, “Do you enjoy warmer or cooler weather?”

3.DON’T use too much slang

Over the years, slang has become a part of the English language we use daily. Slang is also used in other languages. 

However, it is important to note that it is not a good idea to use too much slang when you start a conversation with an American. 

Why? Because slang is only used between people who know one another on a more personal level. 

Another reason why it is inappropriate to use too much slang is that not everyone knows the same slang words. Different slang words may have more than one definition. This means that the chances of you accidentally insulting someone with your slang are very likely.
