Can you Learn English While You Sleep?

Learning Nov 23, 2022

Learning a new language can sometimes be very tricky. You will sometimes experience a few bumps along the way, but the good news is that it is normal! However, with that being said, if you are looking for an easy way to learn some English then you should consider learning English while you sleep.

You are probably wondering if this method of learning is even possible. The good news is, yes, it is. Some researchers from Switzerland did a study to determine if it is possible to learn a language while sleeping.

What they discovered was that when a person is in their deepest sleep (REM) they can learn new words from a new language.

It was also found that learning through sounds when sleeping can also help you learn some English.

Here are 3 simple steps you can add to your routine to help you improve your English vocabulary, and other skills:

1.Read or listen to books

Reading or listening to books, magazines, or any type of reading material before going to sleep can be very beneficial when it comes to learning English.

It doesn’t matter if you read the book yourself or have it read to you before going to sleep. What matters is that you are comfortable and feel that the specific method is working for you.

If you chose to read the book yourself, try reading for 20 to 30 minutes, about 30 to 40 pages, every night and morning (if you can). Not only with this help to improve your reading skills, but it will also help your pronunciation and grammar.

If you chose to rather listen to a book, then your listening skills will be the primary skill benefiting. Your pronunciation will also improve because you will learn by listening to the sounds of the word.

2.Practice your writing

Writing is a very important skill to master when you are learning English. Practicing your writing every night and morning will help you to better remember the vocabulary you are learning. Your goal should be to have your written language sound native when reading it.

You can decide what you want to write about. You can write about your day, tell a story, or you can write about whatever comes to mind. The benefit of this exercise is that your speaking ability will improve over time, and you will have more confidence when speaking English.

To conclude, sleeping isn’t as important as what you do during the day and what you do before you go to sleep. What you do before you go to sleep and what you do after are much more important. If you want to improve your English, then you should use your time wisely. Ensure that your sleep schedule aligns with how you plan to learn.

3.Listen to recordings of new words/short phrases

Another sure way to help you learn English while sleeping is to listen to recordings. During the day, before you go to sleep, listen to recordings that teach you new words or short phrases. Before going to bed put the tape on repeat to ensure it plays throughout the night.

By listening to the same recording when awake and then again when you are sleeping will help your brain to recognise the new words or phrases. This will also help you to better remember these words or phrases in the future.
